Manchester Day Parade launches!

On Sunday 20 June, the city of Manchester will celebrate the latest addition to its calendar, MANCHESTER DAY. In honour of the city’s newest event, the Manchester Day Parade will take to the streets.

Created by Manchester people, commissioned by Manchester Council and produced by Walk the Plank, this massive outdoor carnival style parade will take the theme of ‘OUT OF THIS WORLD’, encouraing participants to express what they think is out of this world about their city.

Expect extraordinary floats, costumed dancers, musicians and other participants, flooding the streets with colour, sound and celebration…

Animation of the all new People’s History Museum

To mark the countdown to the official opening of the People’s History Museum on March 5th, Walk the Plank will use lighting effects and pyrotechnic elements to highlight the juxtaposition of the traditional old, and contemporary new building.

HEAT THE STREETS in Blackpool

On the evening of Saturday 20th February from 4 till 8pm, the streets of Blackpool Town Centre will be transformed by burning installations, street theatre, a parade, and world renowned fire performers.

Part of Showzam!, Blackpool’s festival of circus, magic and new variety, Heat the Streets is a free outdoor event that will feature the début of three brand new performances, inspired by this year’s theme of fire and rhythm.

As well as producing the event, we be presenting our own work The Fire Queen’s Court, when we’ll be transforming Blackpool’s newly renovated St John’s area, into an installation piece centred around our 15ft tall Fire Queen. This fiery landscape will include flaming flowers, screeching musical instruments and giant burping begonias…

Winter Carnival in Newcastle this New Years Eve!

Three majestic queens, 150 local participants, a giant prowling tiger, two national carnival organisations, drummers, fireworks and illuminated skeleton dancers… just some of the elements brought together by Walk the Plank to transform the streets of Newcastle City Centre this New Year’s Eve.

Walk the Plank in Gorton this Sunday!

The culmination of Gorton’s 100 celebrations, which have marked the one hundredth anniversary of Gorton becoming a part of Manchester, will happen on Sunday 6th December in Gorton Park, Manchester.

Walk the Plank will create a beautiful finale fire show, where we will present a fiery landscape punctuated with fireworks at Gorton Park.

ART CAR PARADES on their way to Manchester and Edinburgh!

This week we’ll be taking over the city streets of Manchester and Edinburgh as our marvellously mischievous illuminated Art Car Parades come to town. Over 20 artisits are busy prepping, polishing and putting the finishing touches to their vehicles, so both are ready to meet and amaze the public.

Join us in Manchester on Thursday 26th November where the cars will be on display at Cathedral Gardens from 3pm, with the parade beginning from the same location at 6.30pm. Three newly commissioned cars will be making their debut; The Fly by Andy Hazell, Go-Go’s Mobility Disco by Ed Samkin and Artikcar by Ben Wilson.

The troupe will then make their way to Edinburgh for Scotland’s first ever Art Car Parade! The illuminated mobile works of art will be on display at Royal Mile from 3pm, until the parade makes their way through the city at 5pm. A finale, arranged by events organisors She’s Gott It will then begin at 6pm.

Three pieces of FREE theatre in two weeks

Manchester and Edinburgh will play host to three pieces of Walk the Plank magic over the next two weeks…

Catch us at the Museum of Science and Industry (MOSI) for the second run of interactive family friendly performance The Difference Engine from 19th - 22nd of November (schools performances 19th and 20th.) Tickets are available from MOSI

We’re also getting into gear to deliver two of our mesmerising illuminated Art Car Parades. Catch the parade in Manchester on Thursday  26th November and in Edinburgh two days later on Saturday 28th of November!

Gearing up for a busy season!

As the the leaves begin to fall from the trees and the longer nights set in, there’s only one thing that can spread warmth more than a bobble hat and fur lined parka… one of Walk the Plank’s magical Autumnal events!

Walk the Plank in Manchester and Crewe this weekend

Friday 2nd October, Crewe

MMU Cheshire will celebrate the opening of their state-of-the-art £6m Contemporary Arts Building at the Crewe campus. Walk the Plank will be officially opening the building with a magical fire garden at 8pm.

Saturday 3rd of October, Manchester

Working with the City Council, we will be celebrating the Hindu festivals of Dashehra and Diwali by creating a beautiful sculptural bonfire. The bonfire and accompanying firework display, taking place 8 – 8.30pm, will mark the finale of the day long celebrations, where you can also enjoy live music, a lantern procession and Bollywood dancing.

WTP bring Film to Liverpool’s waterfront…

On Friday 25th and Saturday 26th September, we at Walk the Plank will be producing Film On the Waterfront, a two day cinematic extravaganza at Liverpool’s World Heritage site, the Pier Head…

The window of the new Museum of Liverpool will be transformed into a gigantic cinema screen, showing iconic cinema classics, locally produced short films and innovative contemporary moving images.  The event has be produced in partnership with Liverpool Culture Company, FACT and Abandon Normal Devices (AND, the new north west festival of cinema and digital arts).  Sit back, bring out your popcorn and enjoy!

Film On the Waterfront is the third and final instalment of the On The Waterfront series, where Walk the Plank have worked with Culture Liverpool to create FREE culturally diverse outdoor activities on the Pier Head.

Walk the Plank deliver LuminoCity…

On Saturday 15th August, Walk the Plank delivered LuminoCity, a unique and stunning sound, light and pyrotechnic installation. The show marked the culmination of Art On the Waterfront, a weekend of FREE cultural events and entertainment on Liverpool’s Pierhead and Albert Docks which included street theatre, lantern making and music on a floating stage.

Announcing two Art Car Parade dates and new commissioning opportunities for November 2009

On Thursday November 26th, Walk the Plank’s Art Car Parade will visit Manchester City Centre, marking it’s first outing of 2009 and only two days later, on Saturday 28th, the motorcade or marvelous machines will then make their way to Edinburgh, in preparation for Scotland’s first ever Art Car Parade.

Not only that, Walk the Plank and Manchester City Council, supported by the Arts Council England are happy to announce three commissioning opportunities for artists interested in creating their very own art car, to be exclusively unveiled at the Manchester date.

A full brief containing guidelines on submitting a proposal is below and the deadline for submissions is Tuesday September 1st at 4pm.

Whether behind the wheel of your very own art work or admiring these beautiful bejeweled creations, we hope you can join us in Manchester or Edinburgh this November. More information to be released soon!

Music, Art and Film: On the Waterfront

This summer, Walk the Plank are working in partnership with Culture Liverpool, Liverpool City Council’s culture service, to deliver three FREE weekends of culture on the City’s waterfront.

Liverpool’s famous world heritage site will be transformed with music, light, theatre, art installations and a gigantic cinema screen as Music (31st July - 2nd August), Art (14th - 16th August) and Film (26 and 27 September) On the Waterfront take place.

Take a glimpse behind the scenes…

On Sunday 28th of June, Walk the Plank joined Portsmouth Festivities in celebrating Henry VIII’s birthday, the 500th anniversary of the commissioning of the Mary Rose and the finale of their 10 day long festivities.

The day included a colourful procession and a dramatic fire show at Southsea Common. The centrepiece of Ghost Ship: A pageant for Portsmouth was a beautiful sculptural bonfiredesigned by Pete Mountain and took a week to build. Ghost Ship: A pagent for Portsmouth, this weekend…

Portsmouth Festivities, the city’s annual arts festival, will this year celebrate the 500th Anniversary of King Henry VIII’s coronation and the commissioning of his favourite warship, the Mary Rose.

Walk the Plank have been commissioned to create a free celebration which will engage local schools in a daytime procession and culminate in a twilight fire spectacle on Portsmouth’s Castle Field…

Walk the Plank prepare to collaborate with Denis Tricot

French artist Denis Tricot, transforms landscapes with his unique and graceful wooden sculpture installations, one of which will feature at Fuse Festival in Rochester Castle Gardens, Kent. In ‘Duo de Feu’ Walk the Plank will be assisting in setting the scene, working with Denis to transform the land into a temporary art gallery.

Add a soundtrack, vocals and cello by Vania Dombrovszky and this show promises to be a beautiful work of art, produced by ArtsAgenda.

Walk the Plank at Manchester’s FEAST festival

This Friday 5th June, Heavens Above: An astronomical mobile, will visit Manchester’s Platt Fields Park as part of FEAST, a weekend celebration of street arts and outdoor performance in association with MIA and Xtrax. This mobile of astonishing proportions was originally commissioned for both Oxford and Middlesbrough’s Winter Light Festivals.

Walk the Plank in Brighton and Luton THIS WEEKEND

It’s a hive of activity here at Walk the Plank as we prepare for two very special shows taking place this weekend.

Fire, Smoke and Mirrors has been commissioned by Brighton Festival and will take place in the city’s Queen’s Park. In Fire, Smoke and Mirrors, Walk the Plank experiment with perception, creating an evening of illusion and experience…

The long anticipated Opening of the brand new UK Centre for Carnival Arts will take place in Luton this Sunday. Walk the Plank will be collaborating with other international artists, to produce a finale show which will reflect the many faces of carnival…

Walk the Plank are co-commissioned by Manchester International Festival

MIF Creative, (Manchester International Festival’s creative learning programme), the Museum of Science and Industry and the Centre for Urban Education have co-commissioned a brand new show from Walk the Plank and Thingumajig Theatre.

First premièring in July at Manchester International Festival’s The Great Indoors, The Difference Engine will then be reinvented for the Museum of Science & Industry for autumn 2009.

Liverpool’s Transition event features as part of BBC 2’s “Rocket Science”

This Friday 20th March sees the final installment of Diverse TV’s three-part series “Rocket Science” air on BBC 2 at 9pm. The series has followed the experiences and adventures of 8XS at Woodchurch High, a class who were less than interested in science before physics teacher Andy Smith set out to teach them everything safe there is to know about fireworks.

This Friday, the class’ journey will culminate, as they work with the Walk the Plank production team on creating Liverpool’s Capital of Culture Transition fireworks. You can also catch the first two episodes on BBC iPlayer.
