Imagination Our Nation 2008-2012
Join us on an ambitious project that explores cities of the future with young people across the UK and beyond. Be part of a local, regional and international project that pushes artistic boundaries, leads up to 2012 and has young people from the UK at the heart of it!
What is the project?
An exploration of British cultural identity, belonging and citizenship over five years using elements of music, dance, carnival, street arts, circus, theatre and digital arts.
This is a story waiting to be written. Our vision is of authors from across Britain working with artists from a variety of forms; of actors that will be large, mysterious puppets that move across the country, making dramatic and awe-inspiring appearances; and of an ending that takes the shape of a dynamic spectacular event that that articulates the uniqueness of 2012 for the whole country.
The legacy of the project will be a pool of talented new artists across the UK that are able to work across cultures and art forms – who can push the boundaries of outdoor performance from a secure and established foundation.
Imagination Our Nation – GermiNation is a London 2012 Inspire mark project as part of the launch of the Cultural Olympiad. The London 2012 Inspire mark recognises outstanding projects and events helping deliver the Games’ lasting legacy. Part of the London 2012 brand family, it is the badge of the wider Inspire programme which has sport at its heart and London at its centre, but it is more than London and more than sport. It is for London and the UK, for sport and culture, for education, volunteering and business opportunities.
Who is creating it?
We believe in a collaborative creative process. The members of the co-producer consortium come to the project with different backgrounds: Carnival Arts (Pax Nindi and UKCCA), Circus (UpSwing / Vicki Amedume), Combined Arts (Kinetika), Theatre and Outdoor performance (Walk the Plank) and Live Performance Events (Lanternhouse International).
A larger number of local delivery partners execute the creative and performance work across the country: Imagineer Productions (Coventry); New Wolsey Theatre (Ipswich); Fulham Primary School, Hackney One Carnival, The Kinetika Bloco, Mahua Productions, Paraiso, Tower Hamlets Summer Uni, Tower Hamlets Arts Team, Theatre Venture (all London); Same Sky (Brighton); South London Boroughs 2012 Partnership; Stockton Carnival; UK Centre for Carnival Arts (Luton); City Arts (Nottingham).
How to become part of it?
As we enter the next phase of development, we are looking for partners at a number of different levels, across the UK and beyond, to ensure the project encompasses all of our aims of diversity and inclusion. Contact liz@walktheplank.co.uk for more info.
