The Ship in Liverpool
The ship is berthed in Liverpool’s Canning Dock (Albert Dock complex) to stimulate creative and community use of this unique venue, supported by the Liverpool Culture Company.
We are working in partnership with a number of other arts organisations, artists and other agencies to maximise use of the ship – as a venue for performance, music, comedy, cabaret; as a workshop space; and as an unusual venue for meetings, presentations, seminars etc.

Venue facilities
When rigged as a theatre, the auditorium has fixed walls, and raked seating under cover. The stage can either be open air or under cover, and it can extend back into the cargo hold. Heating and cooling systems have been improved thanks to a recent RALP grant, which makes the ship more usable all year round, particularly during the winter months. The ship is not licenced to move whilst the audience are on board, so remains tied to the quayside during the theatre shows.
Capacity
The ship can accommodate 110-120 seated in the aft deck auditorium when set up as a theatre, and 50-60 in the bar area, subject to local licencing conditions. For music events or similar, the cargo hold and aft deck auditorium combined can accommodate 175-200 people standing.
Access
The ship is a challenging environment for people with restricted mobility - like the elderly, or those in wheelchairs. Tidal states may make the gangplank to the auditorium unusable for those in wheelchairs, when stairs would be the only alternative. Our staff will try to facilitate the access of anyone with special needs - contact the company in advance or contact the local box office for more information in your area.
See the Nauticalia page for a schematic diagram of the ship.
