In tribute to L.S Lowry's 'Going to the Match' our choir, led by Griffins, paraded from the theatre which shares his namesake to a football pitch outside the BBC Sports Studios in Salford Quays. This was no ordinary match. Ahead of the World Cup, this was the final of the Golden Globe; featuring Bury Womens first team and astonishingly “Brazil” (looking incredibly like Bury Womens second team).
The returning champions, The English National Opera Chorus arrived in style on the water of the Quays aboard the Princess Katherine, accompanying a 6 foot glittering trophy. With expert, and often nonsensical, match analysis from our pitch-side commentator Michael Shinn (Joe Flemming).
The choir was thrilled to sing alongside Baritone Dan D’Souza, doubling up as match referee, soprano and incredible penalty taker Alison Langer, singing Dido’s lament as the game went into extra time and a dramatic penalty shoot out and tenor Luis Gomez who “managed” “Brazil” and Nessun Dorma brilliantly.
