Irlam and Cadishead Festival has a long tradition of combining accessible family entertainment with engaging creative interventions and is one of the cultural and community highlights in this area of Salford.

Celebrating its 70thanniversary in 2020 It has a strong grassroots feel that mixes traditional with contemporary and the unusual with the familiar. In order to continue their development they are 'rebooting' the event by strengthening local networks and developing partnerships. We have been working with them to provide programme and strategic support as well as fundraising and advice.

The festival takes place over the August Bank Holiday, culminating in a firework finale, with the organisers committed to developing the artistic quality by building on (and gently challenging) the expectations of their audience.

In 2017, artist and photographer Rose Miller, illustrator Paul Gent and project manager Ben Turner were in residency at the festival to capture what was happening, speak to local people and do some active investigation in consultation with members of the public to inform and shape future planning.

"Working with Walk The Plank has helped the festival to open doors and create relationships that previously wouldn't have been possible. Through consultation and mentoring we've been able to plan for expansion of our event calendar in a way that we know the community want to see, providing some real value for our partners and attendees"

Sam Butterworth, Festival Chairperson

Festival goers came up with a list of suggestions on ways to develop this annual event, which included:

- Decorated cars

- Having an art assault course

- A vegetable competition/flower show with a difference

- Carnival costumes

- Free interactive activities with a human puppet/puppet making and puppet shows

- Something for teenagers

In 2018 we returned to the festival with some new additions, including our alternative vegetable show which had already proved to be a hit at another local event, The Spirit of Little Hulton Festival.
