A nighttime procession drawing on the myths and legends of the Great Orme.

Join us as we search for the elusive Conwy Mermaid…

Winter Light is a series of nighttime processions that combine to tell the story of the mythical Conwy Mermaid – said to have placed a curse on Conwy hundreds of years ago. First performed on the streets of Llandudno in 2019, Winter Light (Golau Gaeaf) mixes mystery and myth to mesmerise audiences, with groups of participants helping to bring alive the narrative.

Chapter One: The Chase

The Chase saw the astonishing Ychen Bannog, the oxen of Hu Gadarn (Hugh the Mighty), and the conquering Vikings process through the streets of Conwy, joined by the wicked Ring Master, his circus entourage and a crew of dark sailors. Together, they hunted for the Conwy Mermaid, who would make a fine prize for the Ring Master’s circus collection – a new act certain to draw the crowds. But where is she?

Chapter Two: The Mermaid’s Purse

The Mermaid’s Purse saw the mermaid continue to evade capture by the Vikings, Hu Gadarn and the Ring Master, chasing and racing through the waves – a story told through with stunning projections at North Western Gardens.

Chapter Three: The Capture

The Capture is a smaller and more intimate touring performance that brought the story to the communities of seven towns in Conwy

Rumours are circulating that the mermaid has finally been caught – so where is she? Will you see her? And is she friend or foe? One thing we know is that the power of a mermaid should not be underestimated…

‘With this unique theatrical experience, we wanted to make a new piece of work that gives local people a chance to be a part of the story.’

Ellie Turner, Producer of Winter Light (Golau Gaeaf)
