A spectacular annual celebration marking the triumph of light over darkness and good over evil.

Greater Manchester’s Diwali celebrations are the epitome of so many things that make us love what we do: creativity, colour, performance, pyrotechnics – and the joy of seeing communities come together.

For years we’ve been bringing Bhangra beats, theatrical performances and dance to Greater Manchester for Diwali. Communities and creatives alike come together on the streets of the city to celebrate this key date in the Hindu calendar.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, we created the Greater Manchester Digital Diwali to ensure the celebrations could continue through lockdown – taking advantage of the enforced digital delivery to present interactive workshops and performances by artists performing from India.

Community participation

Community participation is at the heart of Diwali. We invite as many people as possible to get involved by taking part in lantern-making workshops right across the city – culminating in a night of mesmerising lantern processions.

Spellbound, Diwali, 2011, Pete Carr

Working in partnership with Indian Association Manchester, we bring fabulous drummers, high-energy dance and a vibrant procession to the streets of Manchester. The procession has traditionally ended in Albert Square, with magnificent pyrotechnics fired from the roof of the dramatically gothic Town Hall as the annual Dashehra Diwali Mela finale.

Some of our thrilling Diwali shows have included…

Sacred Fires (2018)
The Blessing (2017)
Spellbound (2011)

Greater Manchester Diwali is supported by Arts Council England and the Greater Manchester Combined Authority.
